One Little Word 2013

One of my New Year’s Resolutions for 2012 was to participate in Ali Edwards’ online class, One Little Word.

According to Ali,

A single word can be a powerful thing. It can be the ripple in the pond that changes everything. It can be sharp and biting or rich and soft and slow. From my own personal experience, it can be a catalyst for enriching your life.

I chose my word with care, embraced it, wore it around my neck, and tried to live it.

My word for 2012? Open.

I wanted to be more open to the opportunities and people around me. I chose a key as my symbol and hoped that I could unlock the creative part of me that was hidden for so long.

Open has served me well this past year, and I still wear a key bracelet to remember the journey.

But now it’s a New Year, and I need a new word. I’m not sure I can explain how my word finds me, but it always does. In fact, this year’s word followed me around for almost a month before I realized it was the one. It kept popping up all over the place:

In my Advent devotionals – The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

In the night sky – December’s Geminid meteor shower

On the news – If Congress can come to an agreement, we may just see the light at the end of the tunnel…

Yes, in the darkest days of winter, all I could think about was Light!

And so Light is the word that I will carry with me throughout 2013. It is the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visibleIt can illuminate, ignite and discover. Light can refer to weight, and it can chase the darkness away. There are so many possibilities in this one little word. I’m curious to see how it will play out in my life this year.

Do you choose a word for the New Year (or have you in the past)? I’d love to know your word and why you chose it…

  1. I’ve never had a word but if yesterday were to influence a choice it would be change. Let your little light shine in 2013.

  2. I’ve never picked a word, but this is wonderful! Light seems to be the perfect choice! I’m hoping your year is full of brightness and light on baggage ;)
